Chesapeake Communities We Serve

We provide hydro excavation across all of Chesapeake – Greenbrier, Great Bridge, Deep Creek, Western Branch, South Norfolk, Indian River, Hickory, Grassfield, Camelot, and Battlefield Blvd South. Our trucks handle both the developed northern corridors and the rural southern areas of the city.

Chesapeake soil conditions: Northern Chesapeake has compacted clay mixed with fill material from decades of development. Southern Chesapeake transitions to organic peat soils near the Great Dismal Swamp. Hydro excavation handles both safely.

Digging in Chesapeake: What to Know First

Local rules and conditions that shape every excavation in Chesapeake.

The Dominion Boulevard corridor

The Veterans Bridge carries four lanes of US 17 (Dominion Boulevard) over the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River in Deep Creek, replacing a two-lane drawbridge. The project widened Dominion Boulevard from Cedar Road to the I-64/Oak Grove Connector, with new interchanges at Cedar Road, Bainbridge Road and Great Bridge Boulevard.

Digging near water

At Great Bridge, the Great Bridge Lock on the Albemarle & Chesapeake Canal keeps salt water from the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River out of the freshwater North Landing River. Hydro excavation turns soil into slurry and vacuums it into a sealed debris tank, so wet ground doesn’t stop the work.

More than one water utility

Parts of Chesapeake are served by Portsmouth’s water system, so marks on a single site can come from more than one utility. Call VA811 at least 3 working days before digging — our Virginia 811 guide covers the steps.

Do I have to hand dig near marked lines in Chesapeake?

Within 2 feet of either side of a mark, Virginia requires the line to be exposed before mechanized digging, and VA811 recommends soft digging whenever possible. Hydro excavation is soft digging, and it’s faster than shovels.

Can hydro excavation handle wet ground near the river or canal?

Yes. The water-and-vacuum process is built for wet soil: everything goes into the truck’s sealed debris tank, so saturated ground and standing water don’t stall the dig.
